The Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA) on Wednesday expressed its deepest condolences following the death of Tung Chee-hwa, the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and former Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
In a statement dated 9 September 2026, HKICPA noted Tung’s significant contributions to Hong Kong, including his role in the city’s smooth return to China, the implementation of “One Country, Two Systems,” and leading the city through the Asian financial crisis. The institute highlighted his efforts in economic restructuring that supported Hong Kong’s development as an international financial center.
HKICPA also recalled Tung’s support for the accounting profession, citing his participation in the 16th World Congress of Accountants in 2002, and paid tribute to his years of service to both the Nation and Hong Kong.
