The medal is Fong’s first individual medal at the Games, and it comes after a narrow 13-15 semi-final defeat to Kazakhstan’s Kirill Prokhodov. Fong automatically earned bronze because the event does not feature a third-place play-off.
The 33-year-old previously won bronze in the men’s team épée at the Hangzhou Games three years ago.
He endured a tough start to the bout, trailing 6-2 after the opening period but mounted a spirited comeback in the second and third to close the gap to 12-14.
However, a double touch – where both fencers scored simultaneously – brought the match to an end, sealing victory for Prokhodov.
Ryan Choi won the SAR’s first fencing medal on Tuesday, bagging a silver in the men’s individual foil.
The team events will kick off on Friday.
