A Nostalgic Revival with a Modern Twist

In a surprising turn of events, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and Digg co-founder Kevin Rose are teaming up to revive Digg, the once-popular social news aggregator. Originally launched in 2004, Digg lost traction to competitors like Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter, but now, with the rise of AI-driven content moderation, Rose and Ohanian see an opportunity to reinvent the platform.

The new Digg.com will focus on reducing toxicity and misinformation, bringing back an interface reminiscent of its early days while integrating modern AI tools to create a healthier online discussion space.

How AI Will Shape the New Digg

A major selling point of the Digg relaunch is its AI-powered moderation system. Unlike traditional human-only moderation, AI tools will assist moderators in filtering out harmful content, ensuring a safer and more engaging online community.

Kevin Rose, who previously left Digg in 2011, explained:

“Advances in AI have changed the game. We can now help community moderators be more than just janitors cleaning up the internet. Instead, they can be champions of good vibes.”

This approach is seen as a direct challenge to Reddit, which has struggled with content moderation issues and user dissatisfaction.

Ohanian and Rose’s Vision for Digg 2.0

Unlike other social media platforms that thrive on sensationalism and divisive content, the new Digg aims to be a curated platform for meaningful discussions. Some key elements of their vision include:

  • AI-assisted moderation to combat hate speech and misinformation
  • A community-driven content model, inspired by Digg’s early success
  • No traditional ads, with monetization possibly based on community-driven revenue sharing (similar to Substack)
  • A mobile-first design, making Digg more accessible and modern

Alexis Ohanian, who left Reddit’s board in 2020, has long been critical of social media’s role in amplifying toxic content. By supporting Digg’s revival, he hopes to create an alternative to current social platforms that prioritizes user well-being over engagement-driven profits.

Funding & Future Plans

Both Ohanian and Rose are personally investing in Digg, alongside funding from Ohanian’s venture capital firm, Seven Seven Six, and True Ventures. The exact investment amount has not been disclosed, but Digg already boasts 500,000 to 700,000 monthly visitors.

Instead of rushing to monetize, the primary goal is user growth. Rose stated that the team will experiment with revenue models later, possibly adopting a commission-based system on community-generated revenue rather than traditional advertising.

Final Thoughts

With AI-powered moderation and a renewed focus on healthy online discourse, Digg’s revival could shake up the social media landscape. Whether it can challenge Reddit and regain its former glory remains to be seen, but Ohanian and Rose’s partnership signals a bold new chapter in the evolution of digital communities.
