About five million of them will pass through the eight land control points to and from the mainland, with Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau and Shenzhen Bay to receive more passengers.
It expects foot traffic will be higher on Friday and next Monday – the first and last day of the holiday weekend – and puts the numbers at around 759,000 and 618,000 travellers, respectively.
The department said it will closely monitor the flow of travellers and vehicles going through the crossings and adopt traffic diversion plans if necessary.
It advised all travellers to plan their journeys in advance and refrain from making the crossings during peak hours to avoid congestion and long waiting times.
It also said permanent residents aged seven to ten that meet the minimum height requirement of 1.1 metres, can use e-Channels at all control points – a measure implemented last month to enhance clearance efficiency at borders.
