The Hang Seng Index rose 9 points, or 0.05 percent, to open at 21,066 points on Thursday.
Mainland stocks opened lower, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.44 percent to open at 3,261 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index opened 0.61 percent lower at 9,715 points.
The ChiNext Index, tracking the mainland’s Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, was down 0.74 percent to open at 1,893 points.
