KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Oct. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Deepavali is a time for celebration, togetherness and traditions, but the festive break also offers a chance to discover somewhere new. Across Malaysia, Little India precincts bring Indian culture to life through colourful shops, traditional food and heritage streets.

With Deepavali approaching, digital travel platform Agoda is spotlighting five Malaysian destinations where travellers can enjoy a mix of Indian culture, food and local attractions. From Brickfields in Kuala Lumpur to the heritage streets of George Town and Ipoh, each offers inspiration for a short domestic getaway.

Agoda’s latest accommodation search data also points to growing interest in these destinations. Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest year-on-year search growth among the five featured destinations at 294%, followed by Ipoh at 272%, Melaka at 257%, Penang at 243% and Klang at 234%.

1. Kuala Lumpur: A colourful escape in Brickfields

For travellers looking to experience Indian culture within the city, Brickfields offers a lively starting point. Known as Kuala Lumpur’s Little India, the neighbourhood is filled with Indian restaurants, textile shops and stores selling spices, sweets and traditional goods.

Visitors can enjoy a banana leaf rice meal, browse for festive treats, or explore the Sri Kandaswamy Temple before heading to nearby attractions. With KL Sentral close by, Brickfields is also convenient for those arriving by train.

Beyond Little India, travellers can extend their stay with shopping and dining in Bukit Bintang or visits to the capital’s museums and heritage landmarks.

Agoda recorded a 294% year-on-year increase in accommodation searches for Kuala Lumpur during the Deepavali travel period, the highest growth among the five destinations.

2. Melaka: Where Indian heritage meets a historic city

Melaka’s multicultural heritage makes it an appealing choice for travellers seeking festive discoveries alongside a relaxed weekend away.

Along Jalan Bendahara, the city’s Little India area offers Indian eateries, traditional shops and historic places of worship reflecting the community’s longstanding presence.

Travellers can continue exploring Melaka’s heritage streets, from the lively shops of Jonker Street and historic Dutch Square to an evening stroll along the Melaka River. With many attractions located close together, the city is ideal for a short break combining food, culture, and sightseeing.

Agoda recorded a 257% year-on-year increase in accommodation searches for Melaka during the Deepavali period.

3. Ipoh: Indian flavours and old-town discoveries

Known for its food scene and heritage architecture, Ipoh offers a slower-paced Deepavali getaway.

Its Little India precinct around Jalan Lahat is home to Indian eateries and traditional businesses reflecting the city’s multicultural history. Travellers can begin with an Indian breakfast before browsing neighbourhood shops and exploring the local food scene.

Nearby, Ipoh’s Old Town offers colonial-era buildings, street art and traditional coffee shops serving the city’s famous white coffee. Those staying longer can venture to nearby limestone cave temples and scenic attractions.

Ipoh recorded a 272% year-on-year increase in accommodation searches, the second-highest growth among the five featured destinations.

4. Penang: A food-filled walk through Little India

At the heart of George Town, Little India brings together Penang’s rich culinary and cultural heritage through its lively streets, traditional shops and Indian eateries.

Visitors can explore Lebuh Pasar and Lebuh Queen, browsing shops selling spices, textiles and traditional goods while stopping for local favourites such as thosai, biryani and Indian sweets. The nearby Sri Mahamariamman Temple offers another glimpse into the neighbourhood’s heritage.

Beyond Little India, travellers can discover George Town’s UNESCO-listed historic centre, street art, clan jetties and celebrated food scene, or head further afield to enjoy the island’s beaches.

Agoda recorded a 243% year-on-year increase in accommodation searches for Penang during the Deepavali travel period.

5. Klang: A taste of tradition close to home

For travellers seeking a cultural escape within Selangor, Klang offers a chance to explore one of the state’s longstanding Indian communities.

Its Little India precinct along Jalan Tengku Kelana is known for Indian restaurants, textile shops, jewellery stores and businesses selling traditional goods. Visitors can browse colourful sarees, pick up Indian sweets or enjoy a meal at a local eatery.

Beyond Little India, Klang’s heritage landmarks, including the Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery and its historic town centre, make it a convenient destination for a short cultural getaway.

Agoda’s data shows a 234% year-on-year increase in accommodation searches for Klang during the Deepavali period.

Fabian Teja, Country Director for Malaysia and Brunei at Agoda, said, “Deepavali is a wonderful opportunity to explore the cultural diversity that makes Malaysia such an interesting place to travel. From the lively streets of Brickfields to the heritage neighbourhoods of Penang and Melaka, each destination offers its own mix of food, traditions and local experiences. The growth in accommodation searches across these five destinations also shows that Malaysians are looking for more ways to make the most of the festive break. With Agoda, travellers can easily compare accommodation, flights and activities in one place, making it simpler to plan a getaway that suits their interests and budget.

With access to over 6 million holiday properties, more than 130,000 flight routes and over 300,000 activities, Agoda makes it easy for travellers to plan their next getaway. Travellers can discover great-value deals on Agoda’s mobile app and Agoda.com.
