Hong Kong’s newly appointed Tianjin Liaison Office Director, Ricky Cheng, is under public scrutiny after social media posts showed him accepting private perks, including a free hotel suite upgrade and a private ferry cabin to Macau.
Cheng, who assumed the Tianjin post in January after serving as the Fujian Liaison Office Director, shared the posts last year and earlier this month. They have since been deleted, and his social media account is no longer visible. Netizens have questioned whether such perks constitute improper benefits for a civil servant.
Executive Council convenor Regina Ip said during her interview with local media HK01, the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance regulates the acceptance of benefits by civil servants and stressed that private travel or luxury hospitality requires formal approval. The Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau has yet to respond to the incident.
