Shi Taifeng, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chairman of the Funeral Committee, arrived at the Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point before 9am.
He was accompanied by CY Leung, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference; Wang Dongfeng, Vice Chairman and Secretary‑General of the CPPCC; Xia Baolong, Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office; and Chief Executive John Lee.
Also in attendance were former chief executives Donald Tsang and Carrie Lam, along with other political and business figures.
The ceremony lasted about an hour.
Tung’s coffin, draped in the national flag, was carried from the hall by pallbearers including CY Leung and John Lee.
His widow, Betty Tung, was supported by family members as she left.
The hearse, escorted by police, then departed the funeral home and made its way to Cape Collinson Crematorium for the cremation.
The government has set up several condolence points for the public to mourn Tung Chee‑hwa.
At the North Point Government Office, one woman said she misses him a lot.
“Every time he spoke in public, his image left a deep impression on me. He was so gentle, so kind – always warm and welcoming to everyone he met,” she said.
“Even when people criticised him, he stayed calm and good‑natured. It really makes me miss him. My heart aches.”
Tung passed away on September 9 at the age of 89.
