The department said the cross-boundary task force, chaired by the chief secretary, expects a surge in both pedestrian and vehicular traffic at all land boundary control points during the holiday period.
Between the afternoon and early evening of October 4 is forecast to be the peak period for return journeys, with longer waiting times for public transport services.
The department said it had instructed local and cross-boundary public transport operators to step up services during the golden week.
It added that waiting times for the “Golden Bus” shuttle and franchised bus B routes could be longer, and advised passengers to avoid travelling during peak hours.
The Transport Department also reminded the public that traffic at the Zhuhai port and nearby roads has been heavy during peak holiday periods since the closure of a temporary connecting bridge between Zhuhai and the artificial island at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge’s Zhuhai port.
It urged travellers to use public transport where possible.
