Jordan Tang and Tse Ying-suet, seeded seventh in the mixed doubles, showcased their resilience en route to the last 16.
They came back from a game down to beat Thailand’s Ruttanapak Oupthong and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat 16-21, 21-15, 21-11 in one hour and four minutes.
Twice quarter-finalists in Birmingham, Tang and Tse will next meet India’s Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto in the round of 16.
In the men’s singles, Lee Cheuk-yiu and Angus Ng remain on course for a semi-final meeting after winning in their respective openers.
Lee defeated the national team’s Weng Hongyang 21-19, 21-17 in 52 minutes, while Ng brushed aside Brian Yang of Canada 21-14, 21-9.
But there was heartbreak for the SAR’s Lui Lok-lok and Tsang Hiu-yan, who fell at the first hurdle in the women’s doubles against Japan’s Kaho Osawa and Mai Tanabe.
Another Hong Kong women’s pair, Lianne Yeung and Yeung Pui-lam, will take to the court Wednesday evening, Hong Kong time.
