The Badminton Association of Hong Kong, China (BAHKC) announced on Monday that the Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships would be elevated to a “World Tour Super 750” event from 2027.
This promotion comes as the Badminton World Federation (BWF) revealed its host cities for the 2027-2030 cycle, placing Hong Kong among an elite group including Shenzhen, Paris, New Delhi and Tokyo.
BAHKC President Tong Wai-lung said the association is honoured to receive the hosting rights, calling it an international recognition of its capability to organise world-class events.
He added that it is also “a powerful affirmation of Hong Kong’s status as an international capital for major sports events”.
“According to the World Tour format, the world’s top 15 singles players and top 10 doubles pairs are required to participate,” said Tong.
“This ensures that the world’s elite badminton talent will gather in Hong Kong, undoubtedly attracting fans from the mainland, overseas and locally.”
He added the association would seize this opportunity to further promote badminton, enhance the SAR’s international sporting influence and showcase the city’s vitality and charm.
The Hong Kong Open has held 35 editions since its establishment in 1982.
The BAHKC has now successfully secured the event for a sixth consecutive BWF cycle, having previously hosted it under the Super Series from 2007 to 2017 and the Super 500 format from 2018 to 2026.
Each year, the association said the championships attracts more than 200 elite players from approximately 20 countries and regions, featuring Olympic and Asian Games medallists competing for top honours.
