Chief Secretary Eric Chan, deputy director of Beijing’s Liaison Office Sun Shangwu, deputy commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong Li Yongsheng, were among those who attended the event at the Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai at 8am.
About 1,200 members from uniformed groups, as well as primary and secondary schools attended the event.
Meanwhile, 20 youth representatives made a declaration, saying that they were willing to take up responsibilities, protect the nation and love the SAR.
The May Fourth Movement began in Beijing in 1919, and was a youth-led campaign which protested against the decision to allow Japan to retain territories in Shandong province that had been previously seized from China by Germany.
The demonstrations sparked nationwide protests and saw a surge in nationalistic fervour which resulted in the flowering of new political movements and ideas.
