HBO Max has reinstated Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong) subtitles for the series Heated Rivalry after a wave of complaints from local viewers, following a controversy that began outside the city.
The dispute originated with a Taiwanese user who criticized the subtitles as awkward and of low quality, posting a complaint on social platform Threads. The criticism quickly spread online, prompting HBO Max to remove the Hong Kong Traditional Chinese option from the platform.

The removal sparked an immediate backlash from Hong Kong users, who accused the streaming service of disrespecting local written Cantonese and cultural identity. Many described the move as a form of cultural erasure and discrimination.
As complaints mounted, screenshots of customer service responses and emails circulated widely on social media, intensifying public pressure on the company. The incident highlighted growing sensitivities around language and regional identity in digital content.
Without issuing a formal statement, HBO Max subsequently restored the Hong Kong subtitle option for Heated Rivalry, ending the week-long standoff with local audiences.
