Returning to home soil after competing in the US Open where he made history by becoming the first local player to win a Grand Slam singles match in the Open era, Wong said he hopes to do his best in the Davis Cup campaign.
He will be joining team training from Tuesday.
“I’ve played a few Davis Cup ties, home court and away. I think I’m familiar with all the faces in this team, and we have a really good relationship and good chemistry,” Wong said in a media interview.
“The preparation will be different this time because I have teammates training with me.
“We’re spending time together, eating, training and recovering together. It will be a good experience for me, compared to when I normally travel around the world to play individually.”
Wong expects the competition to be a “good one” for the whole Hong Kong, China team, with tickets all snapped up on Monday.
“It is a very good motivation, as we haven’t had many people watching us since I started playing in the Davis Cup,” he said.
“Now we have a lot of attention, tickets were sold out really fast, so it’s going to be a good experience for us.”
Coleman’s teammate James Wong said he was confident of winning against Uzbekistan, given Coleman Wong’s historic run in the US Open, and had “100 percent confidence” in the tennis star.
Another teammate Kevin Wong also shared his experience in playing in the Davis Cup since 2014, saying the game requires greater effort from all members as team events usually make it harder to pull an upset.
When asked how the team would like spectators to cheer for them, Coleman Wong said he hopes audiences can be as loud as possible, except for when the match is going on.
“I like a lot of fans coming in to support and cheer for us, but hopefully not affect our performance when we are playing, but apart from that, the louder the better,” he said.
