The force said on Tuesday that that case is believed to be related to a monetary dispute over “certain illegal activities”, and officers are probing whether illicit cigarettes were involved.
Authorities received a report early on Monday about a man lying unconscious under a bridge on Yick Yuen Road, who was later certified dead at the scene.
Acting senior superintendent Basil Tang said the 51-year-old was believed to have been intercepted by two vehicles as he left San Sang Tsuen in a seven-seater at around 1am, before being pursued by a group of roughly 10 men.
“During the pursuit, two knife-wielding men allegedly threatened the victim, and one of them attacked him in the head from behind with a knife,” Tang said.
“The victim, who was bleeding at the time, was forced into a vehicle by the suspects and taken away.”
Tang added that the wound on the back of the victim’s head was believed to have been fatal.
“Our investigations showed there was a financial dispute over illegal activities between the victim and some of the suspects.”
Meanwhile, a male relative of the victim was also believed to have been taken away and held somewhere before the encounter, the force said, adding that the man had untied himself and called the police for help.
Officers vowed to continue hunting down the other suspects, saying some of them may have fled Hong Kong.
