Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said on Wednesday that the initial part of the Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles scheme will permit drivers from the neighbouring mainland province to leave their vehicles at automated car parks near the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge for flight transits.
Shuttle buses will transport drivers to the restricted area of the airport without their having to undergo any further immigration procedures.
Chan said the next part of the scheme will hopefully start by the end of the year, when 100 vehicles daily would be allowed access to urban areas, with plans to gradually increase this quota based on public response and operational outcomes.
No specific cap on the quota has been disclosed.
Guangdong vehicles will undergo thorough inspections on the mainland before entering Hong Kong, and drivers will be accountable for any traffic violations committed in the city.
Officials are also holding ongoing talks with Guangdong authorities regarding the duration of stay for these vehicles, likely set at three days or more.
The scheme reciprocates an arrangement launched two years ago that has enabled over 100,000 Hong Kong driver to travel to Guangdong.
