Israeli strike on Gaza apartment kills 5

Palestinians in Gaza rushed to pull out people from under the rubble after an Israeli airstrike targeted an apartment building in Gaza city, killing at least five Palestinians early on Saturday, health and civil defence service officials said.

Residents who rushed to help said among those killed were two Christian women, a mother and her daughter.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

Gaza city resident Ahmed Al-Dahdouh was among those who rushed to try and pull people from the rubble.

“This is happening everyday to us, its is not safe, one sleeps at night and does not know if he will wake up in the morning or not, we woke up, we woke up,” he said.

“We are Muslims and these are our Christian brethren, who are not involved in anything, they are peaceful people, and everybody loves them, and now we pulled out their bodies, a mother and her daughter.”

The United States brokered a ceasefire in the territory last October but Israel has been carrying out almost daily air-strikes, with at least 1,400 Palestinians killed in that period.

Israel, which says Hamas has been rearming and launching attacks in violation of the ceasefire, has stepped up strikes on the group in recent weeks.

Hamas has denied trying to carry out attacks or rebuild its arsenal and accuses Israel of undermining the Gaza peace deal. (Reuters)
