Hyosung TNC Expands Low-Carbon Textile Market with Bio-Spandex
As the global leader in spandex market share, Hyosung TNC is aggressively expanding its bio-materials business to address tightening European Union (EU) climate regulations and the textile and fashion industry’s shift toward bio-based and recycled raw materials.
The company has built a comprehensive “integrated bio-spandex production system” in Vietnam, encompassing everything from sugarcane-based raw materials to final textile products. Under this structure, the facility in Ba Ria-Vung Tau produces 50,000 tons of bio-BDO annually, which is then processed into bio-PTMG and ultimately manufactured into bio-spandex at the Dong Nai plant.
Produced by fermenting sugars extracted from sugarcane and corn using technology from the American biotechnology firm Geno, bio-BDO can reduce carbon emissions by more than 90% compared to traditional fossil fuel-based products. This bio-spandex maintains conventional elasticity and durability, making it highly applicable for sportswear, swimwear, and denim.
With a total investment of USD 1 billion, Hyosung TNC plans to expand its annual production capacity to 200,000 tons. This strategic move aims to enhance raw material procurement stability and cost competitiveness while significantly reducing transportation-related carbon emissions.

Looking ahead, Hyosung TNC plans to expand bio-BDO applications to include TPU for automotive interiors, biodegradable PBAT resin, and shoe soles, nurturing its Vietnam production base into a comprehensive bio-materials integration platform.
