Hong Kong, China claimed its third karate medal on Monday at the 20th Asian Games in Japan, as Wong Cheuk-lee bounced back from her semifinal defeat to finish on the podium in the women’s kumite -68kg.
Wong’s route to bronze was not an easy one. After falling 4-0 to Jordan’s Joud Aldrous in the semifinal, she kept her composure for the bronze-medal bout and edged Saudi Arabia’s Rana Faiad 1-0 to seal her place on the podium.
Wong had earlier beaten an opponent from Nepal in the quarterfinal.
Vietnam’s Thi Nguyen claimed the other bronze after defeating Japan’s Kama Tsubasa to join Wong on the podium.
Wong’s medal is Hong Kong, China’s third in karate at the Games, following Grace Lau’s silver in the women’s individual kata and Howard Hung’s bronze in the men’s individual kata.
