Hung dropped into the bronze-medal bout after losing 1-4 to Macao, China’s Fong Man-hou in the semifinals.
He then delivered a dominant performance against Malaysia’s Mohamad Henry, earning higher scores from all five judges to secure the bronze.
The individual kata event awards two bronze medals, so Hung shared the podium with Kuwait’s Sayed Almosawi, who defeated Christopher Setiabudi of Indonesia in their bronze medal bout.
After the match, an emotional Hung went to the sidelines to hug his teammates.
In a post-match interview, he said he had made tactical adjustments during the competition and felt his performance had improved round by round.
The medal was Hong Kong, China’s second in karate at these Games, after Grace Lau won silver on Sunday.
Hung said Lau’s performance motivated him, and that she also gave him advice, reminding him what to pay attention to during competition.
Earlier in the tournament, Hung defeated opponents from Mongolia and South Korea.
