The move by the university to reserve its sports hall in Block E for use by the school comes as its campus remains closed and provides its students and teachers with a temporary teaching venue.
“Our sports hall is a comfortable and spacious place, which can be divided into different areas,” vice president for administration Tom Fong said.
“There are multi-functional classrooms next to the hall that can be turned into a classroom for lessons.”
The university, Fong added, also has a good team of psychologists and professional counsellors at its student affairs office and is prepared to offer volunteer teaching support, free transportation and meal arrangements.
“Coupled with the cooperation and partnership culture of all parties, we also have a good collaborative culture,” he said.
“We work very closely with the school and external stakeholders on a daily basis.”
The university is located in Tai Po so it decided it was in a good place to support its own community, said EdUHK president John Lee.
Lee hoped that help for the community would be forthcoming from not only from students and staff at the university but also the entire society.
Esther Lau, a clinical psychologist in the department of psychology at the university, said more than 40 students experienced significant post-disaster reactions, with more than 10 requiring referrals to social workers for follow-up assistance.
She said game and drawing activities were used to relieve post-disaster emotions among the students.
If there are no signs of improvements after two to four weeks, social workers and teachers would follow up further, Lau said.
