The Security Bureau (SB) today held a launch ceremony for the “Andy & Security Bear: Young Citizens Safeguarding National Security” educational picture books.
Published by the SB with support from the Education Bureau, the books convey national security concepts to young children through vivid illustrations and simple words and cultivate their awareness of abiding by laws and rules.
Secretary for Security Tang Ping-keung and Under Secretary for Education Sze Chun-fai jointly officiated at the launch and presented books to kindergarten representatives.
Mr Tang outlined the creative concept, explaining that the books’ illustrations, coupled with an engaging storyline, allow children to discover what it means to follow rules and think critically, thereby developing an understanding of the importance of safeguarding national security from an early age.
Mr Sze spoke about the books’ application in school environments, highlighting their effectiveness in enhancing learning outcomes.
The three-volume set reprises the characters “Andy & Security Bear”, the protagonists from a national security comic series launched by the SB in mid-2024 that has been well received by the education sector and students.
The set consists of three new stories, along with other resources such as songs, helping to make learning enjoyable in kindergartens.
To accompany book one of the set, the SB released a song, “Singing Softly”, which was aired at the launch by kindergarten students.
The children’s performance brought the lyrics – which reinforce positive values of respecting others and safeguarding one’s home – to life.
The SB will distribute a first batch of the picture books to over 900 kindergartens and public libraries in Hong Kong by the end of this year. On-site kindergarten workshops will be used to help convey national security concepts to young children in a diverse and fun way.
