HONG KONG, 25 October 2026 — Shum Chun-ying, a veteran Hong Kong stock market commentator widely known as “Master Shum,” has died at the age of 65, closing a career that spanned over three decades in the city’s financial industry.
Shum passed away at Ruttonjee Hospital on the evening of 24 October, according to a statement issued by his younger sister, Shum Chun-shan. Funeral arrangements are being made, with details of memorial services to be announced later.
A graduate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Business Administration, Shum began his career in 1987 as a securities trainee during the market turmoil of Black Monday. Over subsequent decades, he became a familiar face across newspapers, television, radio, and online platforms, offering commentary on Hong Kong equities and global market trends.
Known for combining market analysis with technical indicators and occasional elements of traditional Chinese metaphysics, his unconventional approach earned him the popular nickname “Master Shum.” He navigated major financial crises, including the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the dotcom downturn, and the 2008 global financial meltdown, becoming a trusted source for retail investors.
Shum stepped back from brokerage management in 2024, citing health concerns after a mild stroke, but continued to share his market insights through online programs and media interviews. His passing marks the end of an era for Hong Kong’s retail investment community and financial media landscape.
