The Hong Kong Observatory said on Wednesday that it will assess the need of issuing a higher storm signal later this week as Saudel is expected to come closer to the SAR.
According to the present forecast, Saudel will linger over the northeastern part of the South China Sea on Wednesday night.
“It will then have a higher chance of turning westwards, skirting the coast of eastern Guangdong, and edging closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary again around Friday to Saturday (4 to 5 September). There are rather large uncertainties in its intensity by then.” the weather forecaster said.
It said local winds are occasionally strong offshore and on high ground under the combined effect of Saudel and the northeast monsoon, adding that the Standby Signal No. 1 is expected to remain in force for the rest of Wednesday.
