Agoda Spotlights Asia’s Best “Skip-Gen” Destinations for Grandparents and Grandchildren Alike

SINGAPORE, Aug. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — A new travel pattern is gaining momentum across Asia: “skip-gen” travel, where grandparents and grandchildren head off together while parents stay home, giving both generations a bond-building trip of their own and parents a well-earned break. Fueled by more active retirees and rising comfort with digital booking among older travelers, skip-gen travel is increasingly becoming one of the region’s favorite travel niches.

Agoda has curated a set of emerging destination recommendations tailored to skip-gen travelers, including locales with gentle pacing, cultural depth, and accommodation options suited to mixed-age groups.

Kanazawa, Japan

Kanazawa offers a similar samurai-era charm to Kyoto, with preserved geisha districts, the sprawling Kenroku-en garden, and a compact, walkable old town, but without crowds or long transfers. Grandparents can move at their own pace through tranquil gardens and traditional teahouses, while grandchildren are drawn in by activities such as hands-on gold-leaf craft workshops and the interactive 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art.

Gyeongju, Korea

Once the capital of the ancient Silla Kingdom, Gyeongju is dotted with royal burial mounds, lakeside pagodas, and UNESCO-listed temples, yet it remains largely off the radar for many international visitors. Its flat, park-like layout makes it easy for grandparents to explore on foot or by rented tandem bicycle alongside grandchildren. The nearby Gyeongju World amusement park and the illuminated Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond after dark also offer younger travelers their own moments of wonder.

Mysore, India

Calm and green, Mysore pairs grandeur with gentleness. The opulent Mysore Palace and its evening light display offer a shared spectacle for all ages, while the nearby Karanji Lake Nature Park and Regional Museum of Natural History give younger visitors room to roam. Mysore’s slower, garden-city rhythm, wide roads, and reputation for safety make it a favorite for elders traveling with young children, and its famed silk and sandalwood markets offer an easy, leisurely afternoon activity that doesn’t demand much walking.

Lijiang, China

Tucked into the foothills of the Himalayas in Yunnan province, Lijiang’s UNESCO-listed Old Town of canals, cobblestone lanes, and traditional Naxi wooden architecture feels like stepping into a living storybook. The nearby Jade Dragon Snow Mountain offers a cable car ride that rewards minimal physical effort with maximum scenery, and the region’s mild climate and low-rise townscape make it noticeably easier to navigate than China’s larger, more vertical cities.

Ninh Binh, Vietnam

Ninh Binh delivers the same dramatic limestone karsts and emerald rice paddies as the well-known Halong Bay, but via slow, gentle sampan boat rides through Tam Coc and Trang An that suit every age and mobility level. Grandchildren will delight in spotting goats on the cliffsides and cycling on flat rural roads, while grandparents can rest at riverside homestays that offer a quiet counterpoint to larger, more crowded cities.

Tainan, Taiwan

As Taiwan’s oldest city and a former capital, Tainan offers centuries of temple architecture and history without the density of Taipei. Its walkable historic districts, night markets serving up beloved local street food, and gentle waterfront parks make it easy for different generations of travelers to explore together at their own speed. Grandparents often find it reminiscent of the Taiwan of their youth, while grandchildren enjoy the hands-on candy and craft workshops scattered throughout the old town.

Jay Lee, Regional Director, North Asia at Agoda, shared: “Skip-gen travel taps into something culturally specific to Asia, with grandparent-grandchild bonds often carrying a different and special kind of warmth. Skip-gen travel is not about doing less, but about different generations sharing the same itinerary in a way that truly works. At Agoda, we’re committed to making it easier for families to find the right stays for these trips, no matter which generation is booking.”

Whether it’s a grandparent introducing grandchildren to their hometown roots or a first big adventure together, Agoda makes it easy to find family-friendly accommodations with the space, flexibility, and amenities multi-generational travelers need.

As part of Agoda’s August Mega Sale, travelers can enjoy up to 60% off on hotel bookings during the main sale from 17 to 31 August. Explore skip-gen-friendly stays across Asia at Agoda.com or on the Agoda mobile app.
