Fondly known as “Fourth Brother”, Tse is best remembered for being a leading man in the heyday of Cantonese cinema in the 1950s and 60s before making his presence felt on the small screen.
His children, singer-actor Nicholas Tse and model Jennifer Tse, confirmed their father’s death in a joint social media post on Monday, revealing that he passed away peacefully in hospital, surrounded by family.
Patrick Tse had been in declining health in recent years.
In their tribute, the siblings wrote: “Our father lived a remarkable and accomplished life, not only as an actor and artist, but as someone who brought joy to everyone around him with his unmistakable spirit. His passion, charisma, and contributions to Hong Kong cinema touched generations, and we know he will be remembered fondly by so many.”
Tse was born in 1936 and joined the film industry as a teenager.
In addition to his acting career, he was also a director and producer.
He later became a TV actor.
His enduring contributions were formally recognised when he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2019.
Proving that his craft remained as sharp as ever, Tse was named best actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2022 for his performance as a hitman in the movie “Time”, making him the oldest winner in that category.
