The Easter holiday, typically a prime window for cinemas and film distributors, saw a sharp downturn in box office revenue this year. According to Hong Kong Box Office Ltd., cinemas grossed just HK$12.67 million between April 18 and 21—down nearly 65% from the HK$38.36 million recorded during the same period last year.
Last year’s holiday lineup included highly anticipated titles such as We 12 by boy band MIRROR, Hollywood’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Kung Fu Panda 4, which helped push the box office up over 20%. In contrast, 2025 lacked a comparable slate of tentpole releases. Despite global success, Minecraft: The Movie was the top earner in Hong Kong with just over HK$3 million.
Other titles on the Easter chart included The Cat’s Magical Drift (HK$1.43 million), The Battle (HK$1.33 million), Hong Kong-produced The Redeemer (HK$1.24 million) directed by and starring Nick Cheung, and an extended cut of Breaking: Inferno (HK$1.15 million). New local films Busting Frank and Mermaid of Lies failed to break into the top five.
The slump follows a 37% decline during the Lunar New Year season, raising concerns that the upcoming summer box office may also struggle to draw crowds, despite the usual boost from air-conditioned movie escapes.
