Wong Chi-wing, 58, was acquitted in 2021 but the Department of Justice later successfully sought an appeal, sending the case back to the District Court.
Wong faced a count each of rioting and wounding with intent, as part of a group of white-shirted men inside the Yuen Long MTR station on July 21 that year.
District Court judge Eddie Yip also found him guilty of wounding with intent, saying Wong could be seen in video footage carrying out what the judge described as “an indiscriminate attack” on people at the station.
The judge said he had compared the face of the man shown in the footage with pictures of Wong following his arrest, as well as clothes that officers had seized.
Yip said the trousers and shoes were extremely similar to what the suspect was wearing at the scene, saying the shoes were unique.
He noted that CCTV footage had caught the defendant wearing those trousers and shoes going in and out of his residential building.
In mitigation, Wong’s lawyer, senior counsel Lawrence Lok, sought a lenient sentence, saying his client wasn’t highly involved in the attack, that his wife had passed away and he’s now on medication to treat anxiety.
Sentencing is due to take place on Tuesday.
