Beijing warns of ‘no winners’ over new Trump tariffs

China warned on Thursday a trade war would have “no winners” after US President Donald Trump announced 25 percent import tariffs on foreign-made cars.

“There are no winners in a trade war or a tariff war,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said.

“No country’s development and prosperity has been achieved by imposing tariffs.”

The new tariffs won’t help Washington solve its own problems, the ministry said.

China also rebuffed a suggestion from Trump that he might offer to reduce tariffs on the country to get Beijing’s approval for the sale of popular social media platform TikTok.

The Commerce Ministry in Beijing said its position on the tariff issue is consistent.

The ministry said China is willing to engage with Washington on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.

TikTok’s parent ByteDance has to find a non-Chinese buyer of the short video app used by 170 million Americans by April 5 or face a US ban on national security grounds. (AFP/Reuters)
