He also said three months prior to the poll, a by-election would be held for the Election Committee tasked with nominating and electing 40 Legco members.
Lee noted that of the 967 elected members in the 1,500-strong committee, there are 90 vacancies and there’s a need to fill them in a by-election set for September 7.
The CE said electoral officials will provide more details later, such as the nomination periods.
“I have directed the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau to prepare for the elections, and collaborate closely with the Electoral Affairs Commission,” Lee said ahead of the weekly Executive Council meeting.
He said the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau and the Electoral Affairs Commission will work on vote counting, data systems and security, among other tasks, to ensure everything goes smoothly.
The Legco general election will return 90 lawmakers for the eighth legislature since the SAR’s establishment, and it’s the second poll since the national legislature passed a decision to improve Hong Kong’s electoral system four years ago.
