Henderson Land Founder Lee Shau Kee Passes Away Peacefully at 97

Lee Shau Kee, the founder of Henderson Land Development and one of Hong Kong’s most influential business leaders, passed away on March 17, 2025, at the age of 97, surrounded by his family. Henderson Land announced the news with deep sorrow, paying tribute to his decades of contributions to business, education, and philanthropy.

Born in Shunde, Guangdong, Lee built his real estate empire from humble beginnings, turning Henderson Land into one of Hong Kong’s most prominent property developers. He also held key positions at The Hong Kong and China Gas Company, Miramar Hotel, Sun Hung Kai Properties, and Bank of East Asia. Recognized globally, he ranked fourth on Forbes’ Billionaires List in 1996, earning him the title of a leading figure in the Chinese business world.

A Legacy of Business and Philanthropy

Beyond his business success, Lee was a dedicated philanthropist who championed education and social welfare. He established the Pui Hua Education Foundation in 1982, funding leadership training programs and major educational initiatives such as the Thousand University Presidents Overseas Training Program and the Warmth Project, which supported rural doctors and farmers in China. His charitable foundation, the Lee Shau Kee Foundation, has donated billions over the years to enhance education facilities, scholarships, and disaster relief efforts across Hong Kong, Mainland China, and beyond.

Lee’s influence extended to sustainable development and corporate social responsibility, with Henderson Land consistently ranking among Hong Kong’s top contributors to social welfare and environmental sustainability. The group’s long-standing volunteer services and support for underprivileged communities have earned widespread recognition.

Final Farewell and Funeral Arrangements

Lee’s passing marks the end of an era for Hong Kong’s business community, but his legacy remains deeply ingrained in the city’s development. His fair leadership, generosity, and commitment to bettering society will be remembered for generations. Details of his funeral arrangements will be announced once finalized by his family.
