Hong Kong’s Film Industry Shines at the 18th Asian Film Awards

The 18th Asian Film Awards (AFA) took place at the Xiqu Centre in West Kowloon, with some of Asia’s biggest stars in attendance. Hong Kong veteran Sean Lau (Lau Ching-wan) won Best Actor for his role in Papa, defeating strong contenders such as Eddie Peng. In his acceptance speech, Sean Lau expressed his unwavering confidence in Hong Kong cinema, despite the industry’s challenges. His heartfelt words resonated with the audience and received thunderous applause.

Other major winners of the night included Indian actress Shahana Goswami, who won Best Actress for Santosh, and Japanese director Daibutsu Yoshida, who took home Best Director for The Enemy. Meanwhile, the prestigious Best Film award went to The Imaginary Light.

A Star-Studded Celebration of Asian Cinema

The event featured a dazzling lineup of Asian film stars, including Jang Dong-gun from South Korea, Yakusho Koji from Japan, Win Metawin from Thailand, Tang Wei from Mainland China, and Wu Kang-ren from Taiwan. Hong Kong legends Sammo Hung and Sean Lau, as well as rising talents like Bruce Tong, also graced the red carpet, drawing excitement from fans.

During his acceptance speech, Sean Lau acknowledged the support of his family, including his wife, actress Amy Kwok, and their son, Suen Man-to, who was also nominated for Best New Actor. Lau humbly noted,

“My son is more talented than me—he’s already received a nomination in a category I never had the chance to compete in!”

Tang Wei and Jang Dong-gun were honored with the Excellence in Asian Cinema Award, recognizing their outstanding contributions to the industry. Tang Wei, who has a deep connection to Hong Kong cinema, expressed her hope to return for future film projects, stating,

“I would love to work on a Hong Kong production again—if the right role comes along, there’s a 70% chance I’ll accept it!”

Meanwhile, Japanese star Kikuchi Hikaru, who won Best Emerging Actor, voiced her desire to star in a Hong Kong action film, citing Michelle Yeoh as her idol.

The night concluded with legendary Japanese actor Yakusho Koji receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. Reflecting on his career, he shared,

“It’s an honor to be recognized among so many talented filmmakers. I hope to continue inspiring younger generations in the industry.”

With a night full of celebrations, heartfelt speeches, and star-studded appearances, the 18th Asian Film Awards reinforced the enduring power of Asian cinema and the ongoing resilience of Hong Kong’s film industry.
