The party said it inspected refuse collection points in the town and surveyed about 1,000 residents from February to April.
Ninety percent of the respondents blamed the current rubbish containers for problems with rodents and cockroaches, while 80 percent supported the use of enclosed refuse compacting devices.
Legislator Holden Chow said only three of the 18 public housing estates in Yuen Long have these containers.
“This sort of new waste collection bin would be able to remove the smell and odour because all the operations are sealed,” he said.
“Also, the capacity of this new waste collection container is way larger than the traditional one. It takes up less time for people to carry out the waste collection so that would also reduce the noise.”
Lawmakers also urged the authorities to modify the design of refuse collection points at public housing estates because some don’t have enough space to house an enclosed refuse compacting device.
