The Trump administration on Friday announced plans for an emergency power auction in an effort to accelerate the construction of new baseload energy plants to meet surging electricity demand from data centers and industrial growth. Officials said the initiative will prioritize coal, natural gas, and nuclear facilities, explicitly excluding renewable energy sources.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum emphasized the need for rapid deployment of large power plants, but industry analysts noted that U.S. coal and nuclear projects face long lead times and rising costs. Gas plants remain the most feasible option, though turbine shortages and permitting challenges have pushed average construction timelines to about five years, with manufacturers like GE Vernova fully booked through 2028.
