HONG KONG – The Li Ka Shing Foundation announced on Wednesday that it will provide Histotripsy treatment to 200 eligible liver cancer patients over the next three years, in partnership with three local hospitals.
The initiative follows the foundation’s earlier donations of three Histotripsy machines in 2024 to the University of Hong Kong Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Faculty of Medicine, and Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital. The program responds to patients’ concerns that the minimally invasive procedure is not covered by insurance.

Since its launch in 2019, the foundation’s “Love Can Help” medical program has allocated more than HK$2.03 billion to assist the so-called “sandwich class,” including medical students, visually impaired individuals, persons with disabilities, children with autism, the elderly, and low-income families, benefiting nearly 70,000 people.
The new phase will collaborate with CUHK Medical Centre, Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital. Selected patients will be able to receive Histotripsy treatment for a subsidized fee of HK$50,000, with the patient screening process and contact details published on each hospital’s website.
The foundation emphasized that the program aims to ease the financial burden on families who typically do not qualify for government subsidies but face overwhelming medical expenses when serious illness strikes.
