Lingnan Intangible Cultural Heritage Shines in Thailand
Two dance dramas will be staged at the Ratchadalai Theatre in Bangkok in October, presenting a total of six performances, according to a press conference held recently.
According to the press conference, “Awakening Lion” will be performed on Oct. 3- 4, followed by “Yingge Dance” on Oct. 10- 11. The two productions are rooted in tradition yet innovative in expression, achieving a deep integration of intangible cultural heritage with modern stage arts. “Awakening Lion” highlights the unyielding spirit of the nation, while “Yingge Dance” tells the stories of overseas Chinese who remember their roots and honor their devotion to their homeland.
“Awakening Lion” draws inspiration from Guangzhou’s Sanyuanli area. Centered on the Guangdong lion dance, the production incorporates southern Chinese martial arts and Cantonese folk customs to portray resilience, unity and an enduring national spirit.
“Yingge Dance,” meanwhile, explores the history of the Chaoshan region and the experiences of earlier generations from the region who journeyed to Southeast Asia. It brings Yingge dance, Chaozhou embroidery and porcelain mosaic art to the stage, reflecting the enduring emotional bonds between overseas Chinese and their homeland.
Yang Xiaolong, cultural counselor of the Embassy of China in Thailand, said the two productions are rooted in China’s intangible cultural heritage and embody devotion to the homeland as well as the nostalgia felt by overseas Chinese. He said these themes could resonate strongly with the Thai-Chinese community and expressed hope that the productions would deepen Thai society’s understanding of traditional Chinese culture.
The press conference opened with a traditional performance. The event also featured thematic dialogues and performances of mythical auspicious beasts, utilizing shared Sino-Thai auspicious cultural symbols to illustrate the close neighborliness, mutual integration, and friendship between the two nations.
Representatives from the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the productions’ Thai organizers and crew members, as well as Chinese and Thai media professionals also attended the event.
