Zoon Ahmed Khan, a research fellow at the Centre for China and Globalisation in Beijing, said on RTHK’s Hong Kong Today programme, that the uncertainty from trade disputes between the world’s major trading powers was creating instability, and that China was positioned to provide a steady hand.
“The world needs more certainty, the world needs more cooperation, he [Wang Yi] also mentioned the importance of multilateralism and upholding the UN system which is something that resonates with the vast majority of the world,” Khan said.
On Sino-US trade tensions, Khan warned US President Donald Trump’s tariffs could backfire on America.
“These have not benefited the United States… he [Wang Yi] specifically mentioned that the US has to reflect, first of all, what has the impact of increased tariffs been on their own economy, on their own development.”
