During a luncheon speech in Doha where he is leading a delegation in search of business opportunities, Lee announced that Qataris will also be able to enjoy 30 days of visa-free travel in Hong Kong.
Lee noted the arrangement would facilitate greater ties between the two places.
He pointed out a series of agreements have been signed between Hong Kong and Qatar, covering 35 concrete deliverables – in areas such as trade, investment promotion, inno-tech and tourism.
One of these agreements, for example, would make it easier for goods to be cleared by customs of both sides.
These, the CE said, will help lay a solid foundation for long-term collaboration.
Lee added that the two sides were also making progress in talks over further agreements in economic and legal cooperation.
“Together, they will boost our trade ties and enhance our customs clearance efficiency, creating smoother, more convenient links for our companies,” he said.
“With our investment agreement negotiations underway, Hong Kong’s network of investment agreements and comprehensive avoidance of double taxation agreements will potentially cover most of the [Gulf Cooperation Council] countries.”
Lee also told a media standup that a letter of intent was signed between mainland China, Hong Kong and Qatar to pursue greater partnership in financial technologies, in areas such as artificial intelligence and Web 3.0.
Describing business leaders who joined the delegation as “strongly enthusiastic” in reaching deals, the CE said two agreements were also reached between mainland Chinese and Qatari firms to boost support for financial services and high-end manufacturing.
The Chief Executive also stressed that Hong Kong is committed to free trade amidst the rise of protectionism around the world, and that Qatari businesses should look no further than Hong Kong and mainland China for success.
“As both our economies diversify, cooperation becomes our greatest multiplier,” he said.
“Uniting Qatar’s transformative drive, mainland China’s expertise, and Hong Kong’s connectivity, will help us realise a future of diverse and boundless opportunities.”
The CE also said he looks forward to Qatari people visiting Hong Kong, noting that officials have been working hard to make the SAR more Muslim-friendly, such as increasing the number of certified Halal restaurants.
