Hong Kong, China’s karateka Tsang Yee-ting claimed silver in the women’s kumite -50 kilogrammes at the Asian Games on Wednesday, giving the SAR its fifth karate medal of the Games.
Competing in her fourth Asian Games and fresh from winning the Asian Championships in June, Tsang faced Malaysia’s Shahmalarani Chandran in the final at Toyohashi Gymnasium.
Both fighters were cautious, and neither were able to score within the three-minute time limit. In the end, the judges ruled that the Malaysian athlete had produced the better performance and awarded her the victory.
Tsang had received a bye in the round of 16 before defeating Chung Ya-chi of Chinese Taipei 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Marie Adriano of the Philippines 5-4 in the semifinals.
With the karate competitions at this Asian Games now complete, Hong Kong, China has won five karate medals in total: two silvers and three bronzes.
