Japan’s Emperor and Empress were given a respectful reception as they took their seats, before the high-tech, colourful show unfolded all-around a main stage uniquely shaped like a giant heart to represent continental unity.
Japanese violinist Taro Hakase headlined the ceremony at Paloma Mizuho Stadium, performing from centre field alongside a dynamic group of dancers.
A short video showcasing the events of this edition set the stage before delegations from around the world paraded into the stadium.
Basketball player Hu Mingxuan and Olympic boxing gold medallist Wu Yu served as flag bearers for the national team, while basketball player Ivan Yang and wushu athlete Lydia Sham led the Hong Kong, China delegation.
China has sent a 1,274-member delegation, including 815 athletes set to compete in 38 sports.
The SAR sent a delegation of more than 800 members, including about 580 athletes, also competing in 38 sports.
The Games will run from September 19 to October 4.
