With this year’s Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Programmes set to begin on Thursday, the HA will administer jabs to eligible patients who regularly visit public hospitals and outpatient clinics.
Speaking at a press conference, associate consultant of the New Territories East Cluster’s department of family medicine, Chan Ting-bong, said viral activity might be even higher in the winter.
Therefore, he urged the public to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
“After getting vaccinated, our body needs two weeks to produce sufficient antibodies and the immunity can last for at least six months,” Chan said.
“If people receive vaccination in September and October, there will be enough time for their bodies to develop antibodies, so that they will have sufficient immunity during Christmas and New Year – a peak time for travel and gatherings. Therefore, getting the jab early is an ideal approach.”
Chan also called on pregnant women to get the jab soon, saying the vaccination can not only protect their own health but also safeguard their babies.
