A lawmaker has called for more sting operations from law enforcement officers and heavier fines to tackle illegal ride-hailing services in Hong Kong before a licensing regime takes effect.
The call by the Liberal Party’s Michael Lee comes a week after the legislature approved a bill to introduce a regulatory framework for ride-hailing services. Licensed platforms are expected to begin operations in the last quarter of next year.
Lee hailed the new law on RTHK’s “In the Chamber” programme, saying it helps deter illegal car-hire services.
But in the meantime, he said, the authorities should step up efforts in cracking down on illegal services.
“[The authorities] should conduct more sting operations. They should also educate the public on the risks, including that relating to insurance, of taking illegal car-hire services,” he said.
Lee also urged officials to impose tougher penalties on repeated offenders.
