Hundreds of clowns on Sunday turned Lima’s streets into a vibrant display, marking Peruvian Clown Day.
A long procession of clowns of wearing a rainbow of colours made their way through Lima’s downtown streets bringing smiles to spectators.
“We celebrate clowning and clowning as a way of life, as a profession, as being an active agent in this society, because in a country where we are burdened, full of pain and injustice and many things, laughter and clowning saves us, embraces us,” said Nea Ampuero.
Peruvian Clown Day is observed every May 25 to commemorate Tony Perejil, known as “the clown of the poor,” who in the 1980s traveled through Lima’s neighbourhoods with a multicoloured tent to spread joy, but spent his final days alone and bedridden in a hospital. (Reuters)
