Hong Kong, China’s Coleman Wong on Thursday booked his spot in the main draw of the US Open in New York for the second year running, following a dominant straight-sets win in his third and final qualifying match.
The SAR star, ranked 94th in the world and seeded second in qualifying, defeated Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic 6-4, 6-3 in rainy conditions at Flushing Meadows.
Lajovic was unable to create any break point opportunities against Wong’s serve in the second set, as the Hong Kong player successfully capitalised on a series of errors from his 30th seeded opponent to seal victory in one hour and 27 minutes.
Wong, 22, had broken ground last year by becoming the first male player from the SAR to compete in a Grand Slam main draw by reaching the third round of the US Open, the final Grand Slam event of the year.
The main draw for the US Open begins on Sunday and runs through September 13.
