Hong Kong, China tennis star Coleman Wong on Wednesday moved to within a win from securing a place in the main draw of the US Open, the final Grand Slam event of the year.
The SAR player, ranked 94th in the world and seeded second in qualifying, was dominant on serve and never faced a break point in his 6-3, 6-3 win over Denmark’s Lukas Neumayer, prevailing in one hour and 10 minutes.
Wong faces Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic, the former world number 23, in his third and final qualifier – a contest he must win in order to advance into the singles draw at Flushing Meadows.
Wong last year made history at the US Open by becoming the first male player from Hong Kong in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam main draw and advance to the third round, where he fell in a five-set battle to Russia’s Andrey Rublev.
The main draw for this year’s US Open begins on Sunday and runs through September 13.
