Government figures released on Friday show that local courts have issued more than 900 bankruptcy or receiving orders last month, nearly double the number in March.
According to statistics from the Official Receiver’s Office, the number of orders issued last month came in at 941, compared with 646 in March. On a year-on-year basis, that number was also up by 9.5 percent.
The courts were presented with 811 bankruptcy petitions, 8.5 percent less than the March figure, but the April total was also 9.3 percent higher than that of a year ago.
They also handled 61 compulsory winding-up petitions, six fewer than in March but five more compared to last April.
Also handed down were 66 winding-up orders, making for monthly and annual increases of 22 percent and 74 percent, respectively.
