Officers said there were 21 fatal accidents from January to March, up around 40 percent from the same period last year.
Speaking at a press conference, the force said most cases involved motorcyclists and truck drivers.
Chan Sin-hang, a chief inspector with the force, explained the reasons for the increase.
“One of the reasons may be because of the end of the new year and there may be a lot of deliveries for the truck drivers. So maybe they’re in a hurry, and so they neglected the situation on the road,” she said.
“They failed to pay attention to the road situation and maybe they didn’t maintain a safe distance with the cars in front of them, or they didn’t pay attention before they cut into the other lane, and also speeding.”
Starting next week, police will launch a stringent enforcement operation across Hong Kong to combat careless driving, speeding, and jaywalking.
The force also reported 18,355 traffic accidents in 2024, involving 23,659 injuries, most of which were minor.
