But none of them have racked up the 15 penalty points or more needed to be disqualified from working.
The system – aimed at targeting taxi driver malpractice – came into effect on September 22 and covers 11 offences including overcharging and driving an indirect route. Penalty points are meted out to taxi drivers who commit any of the offences.
Cabbies would also be ordered to take a driver improvement course if they get 10 points or more within two years.
“Until March 9, 2025, 66 taxi drivers incurred points under the [taxi-driver-offence points] system,” said transport chief Mable Chan in a written response to the Legislative Council on Wednesday.
“The relevant offences committed include overcharging, refusing to accept a hire or driving to a destination other than by the most direct practicable route.”
Chan revealed that five taxi drivers incurred three points, 12 received five points and 49 accumulated 10 points since the system came into effect.
“So far, no taxi driver is liable to disqualification from driving a taxi due to incurrence of 15 or more points,” Chan added.
To further improve taxi services in Hong Kong, the minister said officials are looking to introduce the proposed legislative amendments in the second quarter of this year on requiring taxis to install in-vehicle cameras, dash cams and global navigation satellite systems.
