Coleman Wong made history on Friday by becoming the first tennis player from Hong Kong to be ranked in the world’s top 100 after advancing to the semifinals of an ATP 250 event for the first time in his career.
The 22-year-old hit the world No. 90 slot in live ATP rankings after a 6-1, 7-5 victory over American Jenson Brooksby in the Mifel Tennis Open quarterfinals in Los Cabos, Mexico.
Before this match, Wong was up to No. 102 after claiming the biggest win of his career in terms of ranking difference against the tournament’s top seed and world No. 12 Jiri Lehecka in the previous round.
The top player for Hong Kong, China, will next face France’s Arthur Gea for a spot in the final at 10.30am Hong Kong time on Saturday.
Gea, ranked No. 127, pulled off a upset against third-seeded Francisco Cerundolo 6-7, 6-4 and 6-0 in the quarterfinal.
