China on Friday announced the imposition of tariffs of 34 percent on all goods from the United States, as a countermeasure to the sweeping tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

US president Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 34 percent tariff on Chinese imports. That was on top of the existing tariff of 20 percent.

In a statement, the Ministry of Finance said the countermeasure will be effective from April 10.

The Ministry of Commerce, meanwhile, said China has filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organisation (WTO), following the US slapping of what it called “reciprocal tariffs” on its trading partners.

A spokesperson said the move by the US seriously violated WTO rules and damaged the legitimate rights of WTO members, slamming the US for endangering the stability of the global economic and trade order.

The ministry also said it had decided to add 11 US firms to its unreliable entity list, with immediate effect, in order to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests.

It also announced controls on the export of seven rare earths, with immediate effect.

Meanwhile, the nation’s General Administration of Customs announced the suspension of import qualifications for six US companies. (Agencies)
